The art of crafting elk ivory jewelry holds a special place in the hearts of many who cherish the connection between nature, tradition, and personal achievement. Elk ivory, the naturally shed or harvested tusk-like material from elk, offers a unique medium that carries stories of the hunt and the wilderness. This jewelry is more than decoration; it is a meaningful way to remember the hunt and honor the animal’s spirit.

Understanding What Elk Ivory Is

Elk ivory comes from the elongated upper canine teeth of elk, which are prized for their dense, creamy texture and natural beauty. Unlike elephant ivory, elk ivory is smaller and has a distinct grain pattern that makes each piece unique. It is often collected ethically from naturally shed or legally harvested animals, ensuring respect for wildlife and conservation laws.

Jewelry makers value elk ivory for its:

  • Durability: It withstands wear and maintains polish over time.

  • Workability: It carves well, allowing for detailed designs.

  • Natural Beauty: Its subtle color variations and grain add character.

Elk ivory has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples and hunters alike, symbolizing respect for the animal and the environment. Today, it continues to inspire artisans who want to create pieces that tell a story.

Remembering the Hunt Through Jewelry

For many hunters, the experience of the hunt is deeply personal and spiritual. Crafting jewelry from elk ivory transforms a part of the animal into a lasting tribute. This jewelry serves as a reminder of the patience, skill, and connection to nature involved in the hunt.

Common types of elk ivory jewelry include:

  • Pendants: Often accompanied by accessory stones, or antlers, but also beautiful on their own.

  • Bracelets: can be traditional style or cuffs.

  • Rings: my most popular by far, rings can be made for men or women.

Each piece is customized to your size, and your liking. You get to choose your shade of Turquoise, setting, band, wire border, stamping, castings, etc.

The Process

Creating elk ivory jewelry requires skill and patience. I've spent the last 3 years perfecting my craft. Here are a few things to know about me.

  • Design Planning: I have over 70 designs, but I am always open to new ones, as long as they are original and not a request to copy another maker.

  • Selecting Materials: I work with Sterling Silver, Bronze and Copper. I order all of my materials from Rio Grande out of New Mexico. My materials are very high quality and made to last, and ethically sourced.

  • Scheduling: I schedule about 6 custom pieces a week. That allows me to work slowly, intentionally and take the time that your Ivories deserve.

  • Preparation of Ivories: I was a dental hygienist for 20 years. I know how to clean, shape and polish teeth. My husband cuts all of our Ivories.

Why Elk Ivory Jewelry Matters

Elk ivory jewelry connects people to nature and tradition in a tangible way. It honors the animal and the hunt, preserving memories through art. For hunters and artisans, it offers a meaningful way to celebrate skill, patience, and respect for the wild.

Whether you are a hunter looking to commemorate your experience or a lover of unique, natural jewelry, elk ivory pieces offer beauty and significance that few materials can match.
